Historic charm and contemporary culture

Centuries-old architecture…the birthplace of poet Walt Whitman and the studio of artist Jackson Pollock…America’s oldest working cattle ranch…more than a dozen lighthouses…an operating tidal mill… nearly 400 years of Suffolk County’s past is kept alive at sites like these and preserved in our many museums.

Along the quaint and beautiful streets of Stony Brook, Sayville, East Hampton, Greenport and dozens of other historic villages, our colonial past mixes seamlessly with the best today has to offer at one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants. Many are home to performing arts centers where you can enjoy the art of world-class performers and Broadway-quality theater. Suffolk County has been the home and inspiration for such artists as Willem De Kooning and Lee Krasner…Billy Joel and Harry Chapin…Kurt Vonnegut and Truman Capote.

History and culture are important parts of the Suffolk lifestyle, but so is letting loose. The Hamptons are world-famous as a summer playground for celebrities, the wealthy, and those of us who just enjoy a good time. You can sample fine vintages at the scores of wineries that dot our north and south forks, or catch a high-speed ferry to Connecticut.

Fun isn’t restricted to our eastern end. We have hundreds of miles of shoreline that offer any form of water sports that interests you. Enjoy golf? We have 47 public courses and 36 private clubs – including Golf Digest’s Best New Private Course of 2007. Equestrian enthusiasts can find riding stables, dressage events, even polo clubs.

Suffolk County isn’t just a place to live…it’s a place to enjoy.
